Need a source for micro fine FG burrs (1/16 shank) less than .5mm for very fine precious metals sculpting and background removal. For use with a GRS Ultra 850 rotary handpiece. Please respond here or DM.

Thank you!

Goldjockey what shape burr do you want. My dentist gave me a pound of burrs. They have 1/16 shanks there are some pointed 1s but I don't think there are any .5mm. There are some .75mm.

Thank you Allan. Those would be perfect if they came with a 1/16” shank, but sadly they’re 3/32”. If you come across that size in a 1/16 shank please let me know. Have checked some dental supply sites, but they want a medical license to order, and going back to school for one just seems like a bridge too far at my age :)
Can't you get a 3/32" collet?

Thank you for the generous offer Leland. Adder DM’d me with a solution for modifying my existing burs, and it works perfectly for me. Problem solved, and big thanks to all!

1/16" shank diamond burs

These are FG dental burs, I bought a set a while back. They seem to be pretty decent, even have cut steel with them without stripping off the diamond plating.

These guys probably have exactly what you need, but it might take some deciphering to get there.

You might also regrind larger burs into three cornered cutters with a fine diamond stone.
Won't cut as nice as a precision cut tip, but might be good enough. It doesn't sound like you are going to be doing much material removal so you can experiment with different angles to get what you want.

Correct regarding material removal. Most of the hogging out can be done with 1mm and 0.5mm burs. These are for precise removal of material from very tiny areas where gravers, and larger burs won't work.

Great resources, and advice! Thank you, Jim!!

No need for specialty burs...make yourself a small sharpening jig like below. Grind four flats on an old carbide bur (no need to use a new one), you'll end up with a tiny tapered pyramid on the business end of the bur. They're delicate, so use gently. You can sharpen right down to a zero tip if you want, I usually leave a small flat face on the tip, less likely to break. Freshly sharpened, use carefully because they will aggressively remove metal.

High speed steels or other hardened steels will also work, but high speed air tools will burn them up quickly.

The fixture shape is a square, with piece of brass rod silver soldered in the center, through-drilled for diameter of your bur shanks, setscrew. Adjust the angle of the grind by sliding the bur in or out of the holder. Square template dimensions will depend on your burs; the center rod location needs to be a little above the surface of your power hone.

Best of Luck!

Great suggestionTom! Thought about doing this with a GRS dual angle fixture. Love the idea of a fixture I can just pop a bur into for quick shaping and sharpening!

much of the fg stuff i got from my dentist was diamond worn out at the point. grind away the point and you have some very useful tiny tools. the stuff i got seems to be 3 different grits. free and effortless to reshape to yer purpose.
