When using a 45 degree face I usually see the face of the graver in the microscope, which I think is pretty good because I also see the tip of the graver very clear. So when you have to follow a line, shading and such I really want to know where I start engraving. Sometimes when the steel is very tough, I sharpen the face to maybe around 55 degree and it is more steep. It makes it a lot more difficult to see the face, which is ok, but also more difficult to see the tip.. and I have to be more careful where I place the graver. The more you engrave the more you get used to it and more or less know.. but I would say it´s not a bad thing to see the face of the graver.![]()
Yes this is helpful. I have reduced the face of the graver as well as reduced the width. It does help when maintaining the sharpness as well. Much appreciated!It may help you if you grind metal off the sides of the graver to make it thinner. This will also have the benefit of reducing the size of the face to make it easier to resharpen.
