the engraving must be very clean. rusto or any other paint doesn't like finger prints, oily residues, or any kind of gunk. acetone, lacquer thinner, or 91% isopropyl will do.
weld 3 pieces of rebar, steel rods, even pipe at 120 degrees apart it should then resemble a pyramid of 3 sides.. then weld a pin or plate on the apex of the 3 pieces to clamp in a regular vise. the 3 rods should be covered with clear poly tubing or rubber hose. such prevents marring the...
i cant compare , but have used the lindsay for several years. i have yet to even clean the unit ! it has been flawless in operation. comparing grs and lindsay is like comparing apple pie and pumpkin.
both are delicious.
not sure about all the systems, but you seem to have a fair grip on the situation. i have a gravermeister and also a lindsay. the grs handpiece has a spring in it. the lindsay has no spring. both systems are highly reliable, as well as very responsive to the input--- foot pedal or palm control...
welcome. you could begin by checking out the "tips and tools for beginners". there are several lifetimes of information here. there's a truckload of videos, some free, and some for pay. there has never been a better time to learn the engraving disciplines.
an old, white lampshade can get you very nice fotos for almost no expenditure to speak of. visit yer local thrift store. you'll likely find a few there for maybe a buck.
many of us credit that book as our first real look into the world of engraving. learning to do push engrraving will give you a chance to feel what the tool is doing. i don't think the air toys gives one the same level of feeling. i'm guessing you're considering a foreign knockoff. they may be...
if u have an hourly rate (and u should), charge for the time. elsewise you'll be giving away yer time. if the layout is not desired, and you do it again, well-- yer time is a part of the overhead. early on, i began using a stopwatch. i timed EVERYTHING. i soon realized layout time was...
hmm, this is a practical way of thinking. i've done a few multiple plates at times, and given the task of placing them in a pleasing order. not real easy when someone has a name with nearly the entire alphabet on board.
with client goahead, i have stippled an area into a "panel" shape, then engraved a monogram or such into the stippled area. this not possible if the scratch is in an odd area. or if it's off center. one coulld also sandblast and then engrave. one oh, poo ! erases a hundred, "attaboys" !! giving...
during my start, i had little money, and even less available info. i simply modified an automobile and a truck valve. ugly, but worked.the faces were wide, and balanced nicely.
i mirror what most have said about ray. early on, when i knew nothing, he spent a lot of phone time with me. very helpful. i know some of his work appeared in guns and ammo magazine. sorry, but don't recall any dates or issues. i think he was also featured in another gun mag, the title of which...
not sure what, "mix or match" means. on a simple plaque ( not many lines), i'd use no more than 2 fonts. on a single line, i'd never us 2 different fonts on that line. on a complex plaque, (many lines & maybe a logo) sometimes 3 different fonts can be effective. then, too, your client may want...
