I'm not sure redemption is what you need. I think you actually need a divider.
With a divider you can scratch in level lines onto the plate. So if you are doing a transfer where you can see through the letters to the plate, scratch in a level line and then carefully place the transfer letters...
The first photo. I had to look at it twice to make sure the upper scroll had not been actually deep carved into the metal. Kind of amazing. Took me back to my high school art class. Trump l'oiel. I've seen it recently in you tube videos but not like this. Awesome.

Your work has gone beyond the level where there are reasons to rip it apart. You're at the point where you have to work hard to find even small inconsistencies to point out. Now, when you get the bigger house and have room for a student, you will find that teaching someone else will make...
If you are getting the same lines in each cut it means the edge is not competely sharp. It may be mirror bright but if you have a scope take a good look at the edge as AllenC says, the cut is made on. If you are cutting counter clockwise that would be the right side. If you are cutting clockwise...
I have to say that it is a great portrait of your kids. The few engraving of kids I've seen make them look cartoonish but yours are very natural looking. Its something I wouldn't even attempt. Thanks for showing it.
Of course the question I have is that you don't mind staring at the portraits...

The thing about buying from anywhere in North America is that it has to travel all the way to Australia. Lot of pounds/kgs going a long distance. A lot of money. Depending on how its shipped could be a lot of time. And probably a customs tariff as well.
All air compressors compress...
I went through the same problem many many years ago. Luckily I was with a working engraver who took the time to explain how to sharpen each tool correctly. Its one of those things that I think is hard to describe but easy to understand if you can see it.
I recommend buying Sam's instant...
That should work. The Lindsay templates can hold any normal square graver. But there are quite a few requests for sharpening advice. Sharpening can be confusing for a beginner. Seems simple but a lot of times it can be confusing. Sam Alfano has a great beginners sharpening dvd/instant download...
Its very hard to get such a clean complex design on pewter. Pewter can be really tough to work on and requires a lot of control since the graver can sink if put in at the wrong angle. To get this kind of detail, and especially shading is amazing. To me this is just plain amazing...
I'd like to offer a different opinion. If you're doing this as a hobby then none of the following applies. But since you are a professional you should take a more professional attitude. I would recommend one of the air powered tools. I use a lindsay airgraver, but the GRS tools and pulse graver...
Chris DeCamillis has an excellent online video showing his bullino technique. He starts at the beginning learner stage and along the way explains how different textures are made with straight cuts. I think it’s only available through Tira Mitchell’s site - engraver.com
EH - That's good to know about the M48s. I've been using Steve's carbalt gravers since he brought them out. Very reliable but they do seem a little brittle on occasion. I'm going to need a few more gravers so I guess I'll try out a pack of the M48s.

Actually a lot better than I expected. The photos you initially put on showing the gun before any work was done looked really porous. But the after photos looks great and the engraving really doesn't look touched up. Really great job on a difficult canvas.

Its not worth it. The problem with taking orders for this is that it takes away the time you should spend with your engraving work. When I started to engrave I would try to pick up some extra money doing machine engraving and helping a diamond setter with finishing pave work once the stones were...
Well, to me the GRS vises are good quality, but maybe not for the work everyone does. I have a Lindsay palm control and it has amazingly high quality, like Mike 576 says, like a forumla One machine. But they are hard to come by.
Monk is right. The GRS vise may not be perfect but if its steps...
Wonderful photos and especially a great one of you. The work was really well done. Two questions. Does everyone bring all their own tools and microscopes or do you have that available in your shop. The photo with the engraver tossing something in the bowl. Is that fish?
Love to see the photos...
