    Tips for signing your work

When I do roman lettering I use a flat tool for the straight cuts and square gravers : normal script tool - I use a Lindsay 96 degree template ) for the round cuts. So for a letter like the D I would cut the straight vertical with a tool wide enough for the letter's mass. For the horizontal...

    Guitar truss rod covers

That's pretty choice work and it looks amazing on the guitar headstock. I really like the Whitman's sampler ( does it come with a map like the chocolates ? ) but the gold inlay is beautiful in its simplicity. Allan

    Help, please: Transfer wax alternative

I've used Sam's Transfer wax since it was introduced. But recently I've started using clay. Dab the clay on, not too much. Use clear tape and tape it onto the the design to be transferred and gently rub it with your finger. Unpeel the tape and retape it to the spot for the new engraving. Rub it...

    Critique Request Holt script

You're combining an old english upper case H with lower case script olt. Lower case old english is easier to engrave than script and goes better with the H. Keep the font uniform. Allan

Engraving 925 silver and other metals

One of the things that's important is not rushing the cut to see what it going to look like at the end. In the old days, or in my case, the even older days one of the techniques was to turn the block into the work. When I switched from hand tools to the Lindsay airgraver it took me a while to...

Engraving 925 silver and other metals

The heels of your tool may still be too long. Really take them down. Mine are about a quarter of a millimeter. If your heel is too long the back of the cutting portion of the tool drags across the outer rim of the cut, tearing it slightly. And let the tool do the work. Part of the problem may...

    How much to charge?

If you're going to be doing hand engraved lettering for jewelry the most important thing is a minimum price. For me, one letter to 20 letters is the same price. My minimum price for a store is 30 dollars. If I do both sides of a charm that's 60 dollars. This is the wholesale price. Anything past...

How to denote colors in hand engraving

If you go over to wikipedia and look up heraldic tinctures there is a pretty good chart with the hatchings for each color.

    Leopard with Procreate changes.

If I could point out one thing, its that cheetahs have a thin line of dark fur that starts at the eyebrows outlining the muzzle and stops at the corner of the lip. Your cheetahs muzzle looks more that that of heavier big cats like tigers. But aside from that it is truly a wonderful piece of work.

    Engraving class...

I would look into Sam Alfano' DVDs. He has an awesome collection, pretty reasonably priced considering how much information and advice is in each one. This will give you an idea in how much work is involved and the steps to involved. Excellent filming and narration...

    sketch critique

Learning to successfully draw scrolls is like learning a new language. Its like a comedy routine where a person goes into a French restaurant sort of knowing half the language but not enough of the language. He orders a chicken dish but with his mangled French, insisting against the reluctance...

    Question: What to Charge?

The engraving is straight, easy to read and all the characters are the same size. That's pretty good when you're cutting a metal you haven't a lot of experience with. Keep Going. Allan

Question: Tom White's Transfer Magic White Base solution

I don't use the white solution. What I do is dry windsor and newtons' permanent white designers Gouache. Fancy name but basically a higher grade watercolor than regular chinese white. When its completely dry, put a bit of spit on your finger and rub it into the gouache. Then tap it lightly over...

    engraving on cast metal problems

Trying to engrave a badly cast ring is like trying to drive straight on a road with lots of potholes. The top may seem smooth but if you turn it over and look at the underside of the top of the ring that's where you can tell. There may be tiny dots, a few are okay, but if you see a lot, that's...
