Thank you, that would be awesome. I've also inquired about getting some lessons by J.J Roberts in Virginia, once Covid is over. Getting the right mentor seems to be the best way to learn about any hobby.
Greetings,
I've slowly been acquiring tools for hammer and chisel engraving, and in the meantime I've been trying to look for resources to improve on my drawing skills (the lack thereof). Not many other things have been so humbling than trying to draw scrolls. Are there any resources you all...
What I've been told is that a graver will gouge a whetstone very fast, since its surface area is much smaller than a plane blade or kitchen knife. You'll wear out the stone by both sharpening the graver, and constantly flattening it.
Greetings,
Just invested into the Lindsay Sharpening System (4 basic templates with sharpening stones), and realized I need to get some practice plates. I'm planning on engraving steel (mild and/or carbon). As a beginner, would it be better practice for me to start on harder metals such as...
Greetings,
I have a number 7 optivisor, and it is suppose to focus 6 inches away from the lens, unfortunately it does around half of that. I'm afraid if I go with a different number the work I will do will be either too far away or too close. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I have a...
Yeah, my arms are scrunched up when its 3 inches away. I see a lot of reference photos with engravers having the height of their work around their sternum/upper chest.
Late reply, but I got a #7 Opti visor, and objects start focusing for me within 3 inches, which would mean the work would be way too high for me. Is there a general height the work should be? If so, I could get stronger magnification.
Thank you, this is exactly was I was looking for. I got the 3/32, and it never said "round" on Rio Grande's website, however when I looked on GRS it did say round. Looks like I got the wrong ones (again), looks like I need to get the traditional ones.
Greetings,
Was wondering if I were to buy the 3/32" Square Graver Blanks from Airgraver.com or GRS, would they also fit into GRS 3/32" QC Tool Holders? I am seeing some conflicting information online, where the QC Tool Holders only hold round shanks.
Thanks,
Shane McCarthy
Thank you, I will now be going with Lindsay sharpening set. Seems a lot more simple since they just use 3/32 Square graver blanks for every template. Also comes with diamond stones, which will replace the water stones I have.
Greetings,
I recently got into hammer & chisel engraving, and bought the tools for it. I was recommended an Onglette graver from GRS, and have no idea what to do with it. Does it come ready to use? I've been trying to research how to sharpen one of these, and so far I don't even know if...
Thank you for the pictures, It seems like I won't need to invest into an expensive ball vise for hammer and chisel, the real question is how I'm going to get the vise that high. I was thinking of laminating a few pieces of wood, but through bolting the vise wouldn't be possible at that point...
Greetings,
I've recently bought a graver, chasing hammer, and handle to pursue engraving, and I have a few questions:
1. What distance should I have between myself, and the work I'm performing? I've seen people stand straight up, in a chair, etc. I'm guessing it depends on what kind of...
Unfortunately I've called using that number on multiple occasions at differing days, and differing in times. I already have the steel handles, what I was looking to buy was the beginner engraving kit that comes with several generic gravers with a shank that fits into the Belgium Steel handle...
Thanks for the info, coincidentally I have the your handle from GRS in my cart to replace the one I have now, since it'll be much easier for me to just find gravers that have a shank that naturally fit into the handle, thus I'm switching over to the GRS Quick-Change system as well.
Greetings,
Looking to get into hammer and chisel engraving, and bought the steel graver handle a while back. Was looking to buying some gravers, but I haven't been able to contact the company recently. Is the company still in business? The beginner graver kit seems like a good fit for me, but...
