Glad to help. It’s very good but just needs tweaking. Sometimes, when we’ve been working on a piece for a long time, we lose the ability to see the piece as a whole. We concentrate hard to get the feathers right say but forget certain points of contrast because “they’re not on the picture I’m...
Okay, good job but…
you’ve got a great head there but it’s flat and 2D. Nothing ‘POPS’ out at the viewer. White is a notorious difficult colour to engrave so what shadows there are wil be what gives it depth and character. The eye of the bald eagle is set in, there’s shadow. Use this to your...
Can you see the difference here? You must keep that spine integrity right through to the scroll head. With the green arrow it’s a single cut going to form the head but the spine is still narrow not dumpy.
Looking good but you haven’t quite got the heads if the scrolls correct. They look like “puddings“ as my dad would have said. The spine needs to continue to a round head. The best way to do this is to cut the opposite way to the double cut you’ve been doing; the action is like doing the second...
Sanding after engraving is a definite no-no. It’s totally unnecessary if you’ve cut properly. ”Finishers“ in the gunmaking factories often used to do it as a matter of course and would totally b*gger up the engraving. i’ve seen some of my own work destroyed and I had to take a deep breath and...
I 100% concur with Sam. It’s definitely not necessary and if you learned the “old ways” you’re not dependent on things like compressors, etc. Engraving is thousands of years old and it’s only really in the past 20-30 year’s pneumatic engraving has become a thing. If you choose the old manual...
Just a quick post to say happy new year to you all. Let’s hope 2024 is a healthy and prosperous one. I’d also like to say a big thank you to everybody that purchased my English Fine Scroll instructional set. Judging by some of the results I’m seeing you’ve grasped and understood the concept...
Hi Dani, yes, this is the English Fine scroll instructional set. The cost is £157 and includes international tracked, flat rate shipping. Hope this helps.
Thanks guys for your kind words. It took me an age to write and edit so everyone from a novice to seasoned engraver could understand and recreate the style. It used to be the bread and butter style that every apprentice engraver learned. Unfortunately, when the number of British gunmakers...
That is some great advice from Dave. Unfortunately, you’re not likely to find an apprenticeship as such at your age. You’ll be too expensive for most employers. Apprenticeships are now really only in the remit of the bigger companies as one man bands can’t really afford to take them on. I knew a...
I don’t want to break Sam’s advertising rules but I just wanted to let those of you who might have missed out on the book & DVD set in the past, they are now available once again. Contact me either though my Facebook page/messenger/email for details.
I recently engraved a ring for a friend. It was an 18th birthday present for her son and geez that wasn’t easy. The engraving was simple but managing customer expectations was awful. What she wanted vs the size of the ring and what was actually possible to avoid disappointment was a nightmare...
Hi Sam, I want to pledge some money from my PayPal account but PayPal wants to take the money from my bank account to pay you by eCheque. Any idea why this is? I would like to contribute but I'd rather they didn't take money from my bank when I have money in PayPal, in the past I've taken my...
