Hey everyone! I haven't posted for a while, so it must be time to catch up. Happy New Year to you all. Here's a bunch of stuff I haven't posted here before (penny for size reference, as always):

-----

A lot of people have asked me if I've ever scrimmed on Mother of Pearl. So I figured I'd better try it. It's, um, challenging, but beautiful. This piece looks quite different with even the most subtle shift of the lighting, so I figured the best I could do was post a couple of photos and hope you get the idea!

"Tundra Elegance" (Tundra Swan)
multicolor scrimshaw on Mother of Pearl
.75 by 2 inches
This piece is framed, it's not jewelry.

-----

Ladybug pendant
multicolor scrimshaw on mammoth ivory
3/8 by 1-1/8 inch

-----

Longhorn pendant
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
30mm diameter

-----

This was in another thread a while back but in case you missed it:

"Catching the Scent" (wolf)
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
approx 1-5/8 by 1-3/4 inches (40x45mm)
Also framed, not jewelry

-----

"Friend or Foe?"
multicolor scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
1-1/2 by 2-3/8 inches
framed

-----

This is the third piece I've done for one particular client, she gets one every year, and has owned a lot of these cute little dogs in her life!

"Missy" (Sheltie Dog)
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
30x40mm

-----

This was done for a man who special ordered this for his wife. She'd had a similar piece that was stolen 25 years ago, and he said he'd been looking for a long time for someone who could replicate it. The ivory pendant was custom made by Boone Trading Co, and I scrimmed the rose to his specifications, as close to the original as possible.

Rose/Heart Pendant
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
18mm

-----

Okay this last one isn't scrimshaw, but I thought you might like to see the other side of my business! This is a commissioned piece I finished right before Christmas.

"Got Treats?" (Joker and Kid Rock)
colored pencil and graphite on gray Stonehenge paper
10 by 10.5 inches

-----

That's all for now! There will be plenty more to come. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of you in Reno. Weather permitting, if Donner pass is open, I'll be hanging around on the weekend. Say hi if you see me wandering. :big grin:

Katherine, the texture of the fur you've managed to convey in that wolf scrim is most impressive.
Your swans are elegant. Did you use a different tool to scrim in MOP?
Thanks for showing.

Katherine,

Sam is wrong! At 6' 2" and 232 lbs. I think I'm your biggest fan!

What amazes me about your scrim art is the range of artistic control you have over totally different media and genres! As said above, the swans look like a perfect watercolor; the lady bug is very tight and the coloring hard and exact; the fur is very soft yet maintains its 3-D life-likeness; your colored pencil horses are so realistic! And your layout always has outstanding movement!

I never thought that putting dots on bone could ever approach this level of artistry! At some point, you need to do a coffee table book, and I want one!

Bravo!

Well Sam and Mike you're both wrong. I'm almost the size of you two put together so I guess I am Katherines biggest fan!
Beautiful work and I'll also see you in Reno.

The portrait of Joker and Kid Rock came out absolutely fantastic.

I really like the lady bug - it looks like it's just hanging on climbing up the pendant. The pearl at the beginning is wonderful too. :)

Beautiful work Katherine! I do a lot with MOP on banjos and know how challenging that stuff can be, absolutely wonderful job (on everything!).

Thank you JJ, Jeff, Tolesh, Roger, Gary, Seth, Ty, Sam, Johnny, Kevin, Mike, Marcus, Glenn, Peter, Tira, Banjocarver, and Paulie! :) Your kind words are much appreciated!

As far as the MOP is concerned, I only used my super duper fine point needle on it, all dots. The broader point needle removed too much material. I didn't try making lines, that wasn't something I needed for this image, but I'm sure it would not allow a dark buildup of lines without just crumbling away. If you've never worked with MOP, it's very weird, I guess brittle is the word for it. I could actually hear it crunch as the needle poked at it. Very very different from ivory, and it sure made me happy to get back to working on ivory!
