Here is a close up of the background. It is a bead punch shaped down to .015 inch and lined up in rows. It creates a nice dark gray background opposed to a black background which can appear a bit stark or bold in some cases.

The parts are a throat and tip for a knife sheath

The base metal is 416 stainless.

As a tip: I fill them with cerometal, for the engraving process, for both reinforcement as well as noise reduction. One word of caution, cerometal will bond to gold and silver so be aware when melting it out.

I'm gonna be totally honest I have no idea what that means, are you casting your own stainless with another metal added ? Is that it ? Don't mean to look stupid but I gotta ask. I love learning Different things about this. Is there a video I can watch maybe explaining it?

The knife maker made the parts, but they are 16 ga. stainless sheet formed around a mandrel and then silver soldered at the seams. Being they are hollow inside they need reinforcement to reduce vibration during cutting with a pneumatic, as well as they ring like a bell if left hollow. So the cerometal which is a low melt temp alloy is poured in. Once the parts are engraved they are dipped in boiling water and the cerometal melts and pours out. However if you allow the molten cerometal to contact the gold it will bond. It does not bond to steel.

If you look at the hole on the closeup view, you can see the cerometal inside.

WOW, Perfect description, Thanks so much Now I have another tool for my arsenal . And I'll remember about the gold sticking to the cerometal, Where do you get it if you dont mind me asking another question ?
