A really cool book jacket

I ran across this in the library. Cover design is attributed to Robin Billardello, but as far as I can determine she’s just the art director at the publisher. Anybody know how this sort or pattern is made? It’s kind of like a moire, but far more detailed and complex. Very beautiful however it was done.

i'm thinkin a software program was used. just a guess. it is neat tho.

If you look closely at the seams they look stitched. Maybe some sort of fabric art? I found it a stunning bit of wallpaper.

I would put it down as a fractal (image produced by a software using some formula whose iteration converges or not depending on the (X.Y) coordinates of the point in the plane) combined with some pattern generating algorithm. The line structures between two fan- or leaf-like structures remind me strongly at the far out branches of the Mandelbrot set.
