pierre: not only do we see a most beautiful work, but beginners can benefit here; they can appreciate that fine engraving, like a great building, can only result from a detailed plan or drawing.
hi and thanks to all,
in the 90, a had during 4 years teach to an engraving class at the night school.
when all the students had finish their first exercice plate, i take my first exercice plate that i done when i was student and i showed it to them. Pratically all the plate had the same quality than mine and i said to the student, know, the only thing betwen you and me it's 3 years of practice.
Know, when i see a beginner work, i always said to me that we all begining a day.
you can see my first plate and my first engraving exercices ( october 1989 )
Thank you for sharing these things with us. Your work on the B25 is beautiful! Can you tell us how many hours it took you to complete the Rennisance engraving on the B25. Also, Do most Belgian engravers still use hammer and chisel or have many gone to power assisted? Which way are students taught today?
hello Roger,
i take about 230 hours of work for the B25, this is because i make all the shadows with hand pusch chisel.
at school, The student only use hammer and chisel and some times hand pusch chisel.
I had the chance to have Mr Renee Delcour who teach me the hand pusch chisel method and his point of view with the rules of engraving ( do what you want,no rules but just keep a good balance in the design and go out of the normal way).
about power assist, we know it about 2 years at school but we don't use it.
i don't use yet a power assist but perhaps a day ...
In Belgium, some of the engraver use a power assist but it's difficult to know how much and what kind of system they use ( it's a new method and in europe, i think that the customer is not totally ready that you use a power assist, this is just my point of view )
