Steve,
My brother, Carl has test cut a couple of Berettas (one I know was a sidelock SO model) and he says they can't be cut and that they seem to be made of some type of air hardening steel. He tried a high quality file on the edge of the lock plate and it took the teeth off of the file. I have a 687 EELL Diamond Pigeon I shoot clays with and tried to test cut it. It was glass hard. I'm not sure if it is the tempering of the steel or some kind of hard chrome plating. Maybe one of our colleagues who has been to Italy can tell us more.
Roger
