I don't know how to do a satin finish without sanding marks. Maybe if the plan is to do proper bulino I should go the whole way and polish the piece too so it's really only visible in photos or on the perfect angle.

I think the tradition would be to have polished it.

So,... if you were going to do the elk with sheet? What guage would you use... 24k? ... and how do you cut it when it's so thin and soft, put something top and bottom?

i use 30g (0.010") 24k for all my bigger inlays. i snip it out with Gingher craft shears.

I glue the gold or silver to a wooden tongue depressor using two sided sticky tape.
It makes it easier to manipulate the material and also the wax on the wood lubricates the saw blade. Finish with fine files.
Cut the outline outside of your image on the gold or silver with an ongelette graver and the saw will follow like a train on rails.
Thickness can be anything, usually from .25 to .5 mm.
