One of the practice plates I did when I was in class was a calligraphy bird.
I enjoyed engraving it very much

I had alot off inconsistant depth on the tale feathers but managed to pull off the long tail line somewhat consistant in width.
Do you have the book on caligraphy by Dover? If not its worth looking into, that was the source for the bird and it contains MANY drawings which would lend themselves well to engraving.
