In an effort to keep things on a positive note, I ask myself which of these looks best?

Yes - time to move on
Each has elements that are better than the other. Spacing and line control are the two top ones, with spacing being first and line control second.

Line control is the ability to make arcs with no flats or humps, not wide or narrow (deep or shallow).

Spacing is constant widths of parallel lines (either equal widths or widening then narrowing, but at a constant rate).

Overall not too bad.
