look at a globe of the earth, at least an old one. it's composed of numerous long triangular sections.
the sections are printed flat. the gores as they were called, fit perfectly together. the long way it essentially was going onto a single curve. the short way, there was so little warp, that it was of no consequence. now if one took the time to create perfect gore sections to match the part-- dang- why not just draw on the part ?
