not sure if i ever cut that. one custom maker i worked for used repurposed blades from jrt engines. even in the annealed state were super miserable to cut
Oh wow. I think this one are from old wagon metal that traveled to the west. According to the client.

Kinda doubt the story d2 came around earliest around 1920.. So its likely not part of a covered wagon or its not D2 but thats not your problem.
Have never cut D2 but i have some mortise chisels for woodworking in it. Best of luck its very tough and abrasion resistant...

So you don’t think even a cobalt graver could stand that metal?

I just walked out and made a few tiny test cuts near the ferrel of one of the chisels with a lindsay corbalt graver. It cut... carbide is still harder than steel. I would just anticipate a fair ammount of sharpening... but you have more experience with engravijg than I. I am just learning, but I can say D2 is a pretty wear resistant steel as steels go. More so than O1 or a2.
Is this D2 blade in an annealed state?
