Tried the polished and unpolished faces setting a pre-cut row in 14KW this morning.
Negligible difference, so there is step that could be cut out.
I will, however, continue to polish faces on the carbides I use for platinum.
There, it does make a difference. Maybe not in the final look, but in the ease of sliding through the metal. Especially when engraving it.
Oh yeah, I tried the finest brass brush I could find to run over the setting afterwards. Seems to burnish a bit and knock down a few irregularities.
Not something I would use as a matter of course, but could be handy once in a while.
