Arnaud, I know what you are saying, we learn as we go, I do see all my mistakes I hope I remember for next time, guess it will all work out with practice and experience some day , thanks, no doubt the other side hopefully will be better , thanks ,
Thank you Andrew, your guidance has helped me get to this stage, I learned a lot from this, and I know now what you meant when you said the shape of the leaves will influence how you shade them, some of the shapes I drew where not easy, I will read all this posts again and research some more, I don't know who said engraving wasn't easy, but
if I'm a professional now, when I cut the other side , will it make me a Master engraver?,
Thanks Ray ,but I can't talk to you now, I have to go shopping for a new Akubra,
Than you all for your help, I will keep you posted on the other side
Richard.
All I can say is look at the first plane you posted on this thread......and look at the one you have just finished. They are two totally different levels of engraving.
You should be very pleased with what you have achieved. Congratulations, it is beautiful and very well done.
So now you know the process. It isn't quick and it isn't easy.....But it is very rewarding. So take everything you have learnt from this exercise and apply it to your next project.
Thank you all for the likes,
gracias Dimas,
LVP, and Willem I am glad you think is fantastic, there is a lot to learn still,
Andrew, yes I am very pleased with it and certainly I have learn a lot from this, thank you very much for your help, , now I know I will only get better,
David, I'm glad this is also helping others understand a bit better the engraving process, Andrew's advice sure helped me to understand how important it is to plan every step, and keep at it until you get it right, now all I have to do is become good at it, simple!
This has been one of my favorite threads this year.(And last year) Richard, you went about this the right way by starting on paper and getting the advice of other engravers. Your experience here would be a good template for budding engravers. If I could only go back now with the wisdom I've gleaned from the forum and other engravers, maybe my early works might have turned out better.
You'll be able to look back one day proudly on this piece. And just think, if this is your starting point, where do you go from here?!
Beautifully done plane.
Layne Z.
Richard very nice this has been a great post start to finish and the end result speak for themselves we have all learnt a lot from all the imput from those who know better then we mere mortals and I am sure you have also leant the most.
I look forward to your next project post.
WELL DONE
Ray
p.s See I can be civil kind and sweet natured and didn't take the P__S once not one mention of the flat spots or shadding errors and over cuts etc etc etc hey did you get the Aruba to fit the big head
Thanks Layne, I had to try and improve my drawing and design, because what I was cutting didn't look right, so this is a new beginning, still a very long road ahead, thank you for your encouraging words, next step is to get to the bottom of the top,
Thanks Todd glad you like it,
Ray you had me thinking you where serious for a moment, , the old Akubra still fits, so there,
Thanks anyway,
Hey guys I'm a newbie here and have found this thread fascinating. I am not an engraver nor have plans on doing so but I just wanted to learn about something that I knew nothing about. The info in this thread has made me go back and look at various engravings on guns etc.. and I can say that I have a greater appreciation and understanding of what I'm looking at vs "that's beautiful.." after reading through this thread and others. Thanks to all for sharing their work and the quality of feedback; I know it takes time. I look forward to learning more.
