Hello Everyone,
Could anyone give me some hints on lettering inside of wedding bands. Best way to hold work and most suitable tools. Have been struggling to engrave dates etc,I have to admit I am a beginer to engraving.

Regards
George

Ive been a goldsmith for 10 years now and have been hand engraving for nearly three, and inside ring engraving eludes me altogether. I've been told , not by another engraver, that you need a curved graver. Something that doesnt run into the shank when try to make turns in the lettering. Sounds sensible but I cant find anything like that for sale. Which makes me think its easier than that. Like a font that would work for engraving inside rings.

I hope somebody has an answer.

I use the GRS #004-697 Inside Ring Engraving Holder, or I set it up in setters cement. Yes, I use a curved square graver I picked up from Stuller(I think), but you can make your own as well. I find that script is much easier and more forgiving than block style letters on the inside of a ring. But make no mistake, it is much more difficult and time consuming than outside ring engraving. Make sure you charge accordingly.

There has been quite a lot of information on inside ring graver tools and methods posted on several of the engraving forums a couple of months ago.
A search on these sites will give you a lot of the information you seek.
If you don't know how to find these forums PM me and I will give you their link.
Hope this helps, best of luck. John.

George, there is a book out titled "jewelry engravers manual " its an old book originally published in 1909.
It mostly concerns spoon, ring, locket engraving of the 1st quarter of the 20th cent.
I believe I purchased mine through Ngraver co. the web site has been down forever but a google search will get you in.
And yeah, u gotta bend the gravers. shows how in the book.
