en2siastic..I have to agree with John that is a great lesson that you drew. I am curious about the engraving school at the Liege in Belgium..can you tell us about the school itself. Did you start off drawing and for how long, what was next practice plates, how long was the course, did you get a diploma or a certificate at the end of the course????..any information would be interesting to know.

Hello JJ Roberts,

The school of Liege, Belgium, is a professional and technical public school of gunsmith and fine mechanic. You can learn metal and wood gun making , engraving and chiseling, jewelry, watch making, fitting and tool setting.

It is possible to attend the engraving course at the age of 14, for 4 years or more if you want to improve your skill.

Of course we learned the entire general courses, French, foreign language, math, etc, and all the technical courses related to engraving. At the end of the cycle we can get a technician diploma of engraver.

The technical courses were chisel and hammer engraving, pantograph engraving, ornamental drawing, animal and art drawing, technology of engraving, knowledge of material, art history.

Of course you can take only the technical courses if you already have a diploma of another school.

The engraving courses are held in classrooms of around 15 vises. We learn to engrave in the standing position, hammer and chisel. We were under the supervision of one or two teachers.

To learn engraving we had to copy some steel plates, which were more and more difficult. From straight lines, leaves, scrolls, light cut, deep engraving, carving, gold inlay, to animal scenes. It was also possible to work on other projects during the courses and at home.
With the hammer and chisel technique, it is easy for a student to have his set of tools for a very low price, as we don’t use power assisted graver and microscope.

I hope this answer a little bit at your question. Just let me know if you want to know something more specific.

I join some pics of the school and job done by students.

Best regards.

Francis Heuse.

Thanks for that Francis.

What a great read. No wonder you guys are so good at engraving and the fine arts. Formal training that carries on with each generation and is all encompassing. Just great. Anything else you can add to that about your schools and training I'd be keen to read about.

Cheers
Andrew

Francis,
Thank you for the pictures and the description of the school and the courses. I do a small class in here in
Manassas, Virginia teaching the tradiional hammer and chisel, and hand gravers, also power assist. I work
standing most of the time, unless I am drawing, doing a layout or shading and working on a game scene with the background. Can you tell me a little bit about the vises that you use, and if someone wanted to buy one where and how much? Thanks again for the information. Hope to hear from you more often. Keep up the good work.

Yours truly,
JJ Roberts

Vise

Hello JJ,

The vises of the school were especially made for the FN of Herstal and they are not build anymore, but I was able to find one at the flee market (picture 1 and 2). We also had some very simple vises as you can see on the drawing. These vises are cheap and you can find them in any tool store, they are mounted on steel bar and held to the bench between two pieces of wood.
I’ve already post a picture my own vise before but here it is again, I like it this way, it is heavy, strong, and vibration free.
Take good care.
Francis.

Francis..Thank you for the photos of the vises..I do remember you posting your rock solid vise on your work bench. The vise you have pictured leaning against the tree looks very solid also, and remind me of our blacksmithing vises. I do have a small vise for a set-up like you have in the drawing, and I will set something up in the near future. Thank you again for your response and would like to see more of your firearms engravings. Keep up the good work.
