engraving titanium

has anyone had any experience w engraving titanium? All I know is that a customer wants a titanium ring engraved, it posilshed pretty easy so I can't imagine it would be too hard to cut. Any help would be great.

The stuff I've engraved was OK. I used carbides and it cut well. The shaving were
sharp as heck. I would tend to sweep up after cutting the job.

Titanium shears like aluminum. It doesn't make the regular type curl that you get from other metals. I use the c-max 120 degree graver in one of the soft hit collets with a 55 degree face. I've used both a traditional heel and a parallel heel for the titanium and prefer the traditional heel. It seems to hold up better for me. Good luck and post your outcome.

Tira, there was another tread on this, I think you engrave a different grade of Titanium, as I engrave my Titanium with nice curls coming out the cuts using a Gensteel 120° 45°face.

Arnaud, I wish I had the nice CP titanium to engrave. Unfortunately I just have the alloy. It's good to know there is titanium that cuts nicely. The ring that jetta has - hopefully it's the CP as well.

I have engraved Titanium long time ago (wedding ring inside, script letters, handpush tool) and it was a real pain in the neck. I guess, those wedding bands are machined and the manufacturer is not much worried about the carvability of the metal, using high capacity milling equipments. Indeed, there are different ways of mixing the components of an alloy, but there are no rules to communicate such quality, so we would not know how a particular piece handles, before making the first cut. I sure wish, that they never used Titanium for jewelry. After all, that's not a precious metal and as a material does not represent any considerable value. Lately they are using stainless steel in the jewelry industry (with hefty price tags) but at least those we can cut with ease...
