Does anyone know who would have engraved this Winchester 9422. No signature on it that I can see, unless it’s under the wood.

That scroll work, Layout and design, looks similar to some of the factory Winchester engraving. If you look in the book, Winchester Engraving by R.L Wilson on pg. 394 there is a very similar layout. To my eyes the quality of the inlay is also similar to factory work. Of course an independent artist may have been asked to replicate that kind of work. I'll bet Roger will know what's up.

i don’t know if you can change the title of your post to something that describes what you’re after. Maybe, “looking for info on this engraving.” He’d probably see that eventually. You could probably send him a message too. Roger Bleile

JJ Roberts' point about silver inlaid animals is a valid one, however, the photos are too poor to get a good look at the scrollwork. The scrollwork is the key to identification. A larger and well-lit image will be needed for proper attribution.

Hope these are better.

Now that I can see the scrollwork clearly, I can verify that the work was done by one of several Japanese engravers who worked for GIs during the occupation period. Japanese scrollwork looks, in some ways like the German work they are copying but the Japanese have distinctive characteristics due, in part, to the way that they cut toward themselves rather than away from the engraver like European and most American engravers. The Japanese engravers were very prolific based on the large number of guns that I have seen with their work.
