My college art professor taught me to look at objects with a definite light source (don't forget the "reflected" light on round objects), to see spaces instead of objects, via the "right Side of the Brain" book and to always either view the work in a mirror or squint at it to "see" tonal values and balance. It's a lot to remember but it will come naturally with practice.

Sam,
Lee has a casting of that engraving its a great job, I'll have to check it out again, I've admired Fracassi's work for a long time, when your used to thinking for shape instead of direction it can be tough to retrain yourself.

Andrew,
Great job on the tutorial.

Good tip about squinting the eys, Marcus!

And a very good thread including comments, Andrew, thank you. It took me years before I discovered that a good way to read without your glasses when in bright sunlight is to form a small pin hole with your fingers to look at the page, hence cutting out the wide f stop of your iris and bringing the image into sharper focus. I guess this is another kind of squinting application, useful when ordering from the menu of cocktails while on at a beach resort!
Andrew, see you in Christchurch next month, if not Reno. Marcus, looking forward to swapping a few more songs with you sometime this year in the UK!

best
