finished cart buckle

kinda looks like I hacked it out with a shovel and pick...but its done. Was trying to give it some depth and dimension. Didnt turn out exactly like I wanted but it was my very first try at fabrication. I guess you cant learn without putting it out there. The base is nickel with brass overlay... all hard soldered. Any help is appreciated... my biggest struggle was trying to smooth out the surface after taking the material away. It was like engraving over the rocky mountains! I need tool and technique help!

cart buckle

i like this. it's so simple, yet nice, it begs to be enjoyed, at least by me. why do you call it a "cart" buckle ? there's no comparison, but i once made a brass buckle for a "mountain man" out of 1/4" thick brass . as i recall it was about 4 or 5 x 7 inches "

Shawn, That looks pretty good from what i see! A little sandpaper and a nice sharp flatgraver ought to help on the smoothing end of things.

Great first attempt at it, it's all downhill from here! Maybe if you explain the steps, materials, and tools used in your build, some of us could offer advice to make life a little easier next go-round.

Shawn~ I am glad to see that you decided to fully pierce the overlay on this cart buckle, it better exposes the dimension that you want it to portray. I applaud you for your effort.
