Why would I give free lessons?
1. When I wanted to get into engraving, I found the whole experience confusing and frustrating, not to mention expensive. It is hard to know what is essential and what is peripheral to a beginner. I would like to be the guide I never had.
2. I enjoy mentoring and teaching. Eventually I want to teach professionally. But I need students to help me develop my teaching style and approach.
Who, Where and when?
I probably could handle one or two students to start. I would be teaching hammer and chisel techniques. We would meet in a public space, probably HeatSync Labs (a maker space) in downtown Mesa. (I haven't asked them yet, but I don't imagine there will be a problem.)
We would start sometime after you contact me. I would need to gather materials and tools, make a lesson plan, etc. There might be some cost for materials. We can discuss that.
Lessons would be in Monday or Tuesday evenings or Saturday.
About me...
I am primarily a custom banjo builder. I started by engraving mother of pearl inlay. I began engraving metal banjo parts a couple years ago.
My website is www.hicklerbanjo.com.
My email address is hicklerbanjo@gmail.com
