Just returned from a teaching engagement in Texas at Wes
Griffin's Texas school of Engraving-wonderful students, stimulating discussion, and a great host. We covered a number of different areas including light and shade, how to identify the different areas of light and shade, why they are where they are, how to change the light source if needed, how to use these principles to add atmosphere and form. We discussed principles of design and layout for scroll and ornamental work as well as for scenes and figures. We touched on how to create 3D effects for scroll and figures. A couple of valuable and excellent learning activities were helping one student with his bulino on a deer. The discussion regarding light and shade was used to give the deer more form and transform him into a magnificent critter. With another activity a solid design was cast to the large screen and the class modified the design based upon what they had learned. We also discussed open vs. closed scroll, English, Blackleaf, etc., And so much more.........

The photo was not done in class but is a demonstration piece I did quite a few years ago. It is an example of a more open scroll. Besides I like the quail.
