gold barrel bands

Two questions when putting gold bands around a barrel of a rifle. 1. What gauge gold should be used when putting two bands one smaller than the other? When the bands are near the action should go completely around the barrel or just what will show and no gold under the stock?

I usually take the gold about 1/8 inch below the wood line. The gauge depends on the width and depth of the cavity.

You can use the larger gauge for the larger groove and then reduce it with a draw plate to fit the smaller groove......if you have one.
