Ok, well, I haven't read all the replies to this but my two cents worth would be if you enjoy doing it, keep doing it.

If you're getting discouraged... are you sharpening your tools properly? If the chisel is even a tiny tiny bit blunt then you won't have anything but trouble. I like the lindsay template sharpening system which is pretty cheap compared to some alternatives. Also Sam Alfano has a good post on youtube about hand sharpening gravers.

What country, state etc are you in? Just curious.

And it might not be the hobby for you... A cheaper alternative maybe woodcarving...
