Hello to all! I'm new here, and got interested in engraving recently. I'm considering learning to do this (by hand, probably H&C) with the goal of engraving three buckles for my granddaughter's group as she got heavily involved in Revolutionary War reenactments. Do you think I could learn to do a decent job in a year's time? I'm very handy, and done some jewelry and enameling in the past, as well as sculpture. That said, I would also like to have references for somebody that could do them for me. Below is the design I came up with for the 3 x 2.375" (brass?) buckles. Will appreciate any feedback.

in one year you could be an excellent engraver-- or a total failure. only you can answer that question. please know this forum is here to help at all levels. all you need to do is ask.

Monk is right as usual. There are a lot of people to help, but no one here can make you do the work necessary to learn. The key is to not get frustrated at the start and work past the beginning failures until you can have confidence enough to follow a line. One line at a time and not get ahead of yourself. But if you need help I can help you.

IMG_3720.png IMG_3721.png IMG_3722.png Welcome Alex B, to something wonderful. Every milestone comes with an amazing sense accomplishment. These fine gentlemen can surely show you the way. Fairly slow study myself but here is what one year of practice yielded. Good luck and hope to see you posting some progress in the future. Have a great week.
