I wanted to mount my fluorescent ring light on my Meiji microscope and didn't want to scratch the barlow lens housing. So, I gave it a bit of thought and came up with this idea. I found a rubber grommet with an inner diameter of 1 3/4" that goes on the barlow lens and the three thumb screws tighten and suspend the light perfectly.

If anyone else wants to do the same thing, the grommet is Part No. RGR1342 and is sold by "dangoodbuy" on eBay: http://stores.ebay.com/dangoodbuy

You can also coat the ends of the screws with Plasti Dip. I use it on plier handles, etc., to increase gripping without killing my hand, as well as coating items to prevent scratching. For those screws, you can just dip a toothpick in the Plasti Dip and coat the end of the screw in place--just don't coat it back over threads that you want to use. With the black Plasti Dip, you won't even see it OR dress it up with one of the colors.
