All,

Thanks.

Methylene chloride makes sense. I'm a chemist so I can get to that stuff. Especially since it didn't respond to acetone very much. I suspect overheating it or enough reheats is going to cause the polymer to break and reform as crosslinks. That's known to happen with this stuff. So I suspect I cooked it - well, I'm sure I did - and changed its molecular structure a bit.

Thanks all. I'm definitely using bags or tape next time.

I remember reading an article in a woodworking magazine about methylene chloride and the dangers. It suggested that the body can become desensitized to the vapors and when inhaled causes a build up of carbon monoxide in the blood. This means the heart gets less oxygen and can cause a heart attack. It advised that anyone with a heart condition should be overly cautious when using it. Even in healthy people it can cause heart problems.

Also for small flat items, golf club handle tape works great. A real thin double back sticking tape MTC YMMV
