Hi All,

I love engraved firearms, and love many of the engravings shown in this forum. I am looking for an engraver to do some inlay in a Colt 1908 pistol.

Would an inlaid like the s&w shown below be be expensive? Minus the engraving in the background, about how much the inlay on the side of the revolver cost?

Second question. Would the inlays still look good without the engraved background?

Thanks.

As a general rule for me inlay of lines is so much an inch. $100 to $150 per is about average. inlayed leaves would be calculated on time I would expect to spend inlaying each leaf. The leaves in your sample would come to about $1500. The scroll work in the style illustrated is again based on time I expect to put into the job. This is a fairly straight forward gun design although it appears to be 100% coverage. That is a lot of sq inches on curved surfaces. There could be additional costs for gunsmithing, metal prep, hardness of material. Lots of factors go into making a bid. Most engravers would require a percentage down and either so much a stage (say the frame, the barrel, the cylinder, the finished job. Full payment before gun is returned. Carving the grip is a whole neither job and is separate from the gun. I this very general guide gives you some idea of what goes into a project. Fred

imho, i think it would be incomplete without the design in the background. or at least something to compliment the inlay.
