i really like seeing different items that have been engraved or carved, this is unusual. wonder what ever happened to that egyptian ?

It looks to me like that was chased rather than engraved. The Egyptian motif was popular in the the teens and twenties (L.C. Tiffany actually had a party with an Egyptian theme that was quite the event costumes and all). There is another metalworker VanErp that is known for his trench art vases - nothing as detailed as this scarab though.
