Just a brief post to say hello.

I've been lurking as a guest for a few months and decided to join in.

My interest is as a hobby, I'm semi-retired and have time on my hands and I always wanted to learn to engrave. My use will be for myself and a few gifts if I can get to an acceptable level.

Welcome to the café'. Get a cup and join in. Tell us a bit about your background and areas that you feel you can share and we will do like wise with all we can. Always good to get to know a bit about our forum friends. Got questions? So does everyone else, some more advanced than others. Many new folks will find lots of answers in the tips or by doing a search on the topic you need. Fred

Welcome. I am also retired and going the same route as you are, picking up tips for a hobby to keep myself occupied. If you do your homework, engraving can be done a lot cheaper than some of the suggestions you will see.

welcome to this university of instruction. so much info here, all you need do-- turn off the tv, get a looseleaf, and start reading/note taking. it's incumbent upon me to say, merely removing curls of metal is not to be the first thing on your bucket list. the first- is learning to draw. good drawing, and design concepts, must accompany engraving. not wishing to scare you away, just saying what you see done here is based on the aforementioned principles.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I worked on ships and large barges (Blue water), but had to retire for health reasons 10 years ago. I have worked in metal shops since 1972 doing layout, forming, mill and lathe work, and welding.

In the last 10 years I have done CAD design of jewelry and freelance model making.

My interest in engraving is primarily for my personal firearms. I know that I will never be as good as most here, but I only want modest embellishments.

Thanks for listening, I hope that I don't become too much of a pest.
