Hi guys,
I have a client ask me to engrave a stainless steel Kahr slider. Is it engravable?

I did not find it on the list of the engravable guns posted here.

Thank you.

try a magnet. if it readily sticks to it, it probably has less of the hard alloying mtls in it. you can also take a scriber and do a tiny scratch test in a non-critical area. don't be fooled even if it seems to pass those 2 tests, there may still be a few hard spots. perhaps the manufacturer could shed a little light on this for you. never hurts to try.

I don't have the slider with me. I guess I'm gonna say "No" since no one seems to have experience with it. Not worth the aggravation.

It's probably doable. As long as it's not one of those coated deals. I looked at their site. The regular stainless guns should be able to be cut. The biggest thing will be experiment with your face and heel. If you aren't able to control a 120' graver I'd turn it down. The strength of the 120 will usually allow you to cut most metals.

I would not by any means take a full relief job on these kinds of guns. You will be kicking yourself as your square gravers will be breaking left and right!!

if you give this a whack, you may become more expert on sharpening than engraving. i found out the hard way. when it comes to ss guns-- phooey ! i'd rather watch judge judy.

Yes they re, I engraver one in 45 auto using a Lindsay classic. It was hard as I would dull cutters more than on some other guns but would not an issue doing another's.

The Kahr should be engraveable but very hard.
I spoke with Kahr while I was at SHOT show and while I can't remember exactly what stainless they were using, I do remember thinking that I'd be wary on the type of work I'd do on one of these guns. It will be harder than 416. That I'm sure of. I'm at the point where I won't cut anything harder than 416. It's just not worth the hassle to me.
Oh and the part you are referring to is called the "Slide" not Slider.
I talked to all the gun manufacturers I could get an audience with while at SHOT and took notes on what grades of steel they were using. If I can find the notes I'll post them.

I'm a fairly new engraver. I mostly engrave on motorcycle alluminum parts.
The only stainless steel I engraved were electronic cigarettes/ vapors.

As far as sharpening, I don't have lots of experience. So far I only use Ray Cover Templates to sharpen my square/ flat gravers and I have to sharpen it a couple of times to complete a job on stainless steel vapor/ electronic cigarette.

Who made 120 degree sharpening template? I'd like to experience with it for my next stainless steel commissions.

Thank you.
