Hi there.

My name is Georg Eggert Hannah (or Eddi for short) and I am a goldsmith from Iceland.
I am taking the jewelry engraving course in Belgium this summer. I was wandering if any of you have taken this course. I am getting a little worried that I am not good enoug to take the class, after seeing the quality work from the engravers here. I hope you can tell me a little bit about what to expect from this course.

All the best
Eddi

I looked at the schedule for the summer courses in Belgium. Sam Alfano is teaching the beginers engraving course. I took a beginners course in Kansas that Sam taught; in fact Billzach and I were in the same class. He is one of the finest teachers I have experienced. He took people who probably had less knowledge about engraving than you have and gave them more training in five days than I thought possible. He's very organized and if he has time he can probably adapt some of his techniques to your needs if you ask. Just relax and enjoy the experience.

hi: i never took a training course. it took me years of frustrating trial and error to get to my present level. any training will make you better- faster as you will be told what pitfalls to avoid. that alone, is worth the price and time of formal training ! you will also be shown the correct way to do things. how precious this time is !!

Ovals and Circles

Hi Eddi,
I'm mostly a Jewellery engraver. The gun engraving style is quite
impressive, but is not what we are concerned with in Jewellery.
Have a look at my sample plate. Most of what you going to do on rings
is concerned with oval and circles. If you can draw the points of a
compass, then will have the oval taken care of. This gives you the
motif that goes around stones. Circles use repetitive elements that simple
repeat or go into progressions of the design. Lockets are just small
vignettes of a center design. All these type of design require short strokes
of the graver, except borders lines. If you break down the designs into
their elements, they're pretty simple. Lettering simple requires lots of
practice, till it becomes second nature. Sort of like pumping iron
for engravers.

You should go to the class.
They'll show you the basics and get you engraving. After that you'll
see that it's not that hard to do.
Jim
