Universal laser has a fiber laser that marks directly on some metals.
You can use a co2 laser with cermark or thermark to mark stainless and some metals. They start at $10,000 for a basic set up.

Hi Harvest

I'm not really sure what it is that you are asking.

Why do you want a laser for practice plates? Is it to transfer the the design to the metal or something similar so you can cut it.

If it is, then there are transfer techniques that don't require the use of computers or any high tech machinery.

Perhaps if you explained what it is you are trying to acheive and what you want to do, then we maybe able to help.

Cheers

I USE A 30 WATT EPILOG. THO I SELDOM USE IT FOR TRANSFER. KINDA LIKE SWATTIN FLIES WITH A SHOTGUN. i see no reason to use a laser to do transfer , unless you're doing dozens of the same pattern on "quick" work. even cheap laser units start at around 8 to 9 grand. mine was 25 ! lots of dough for pattern transfer ! perhaps you meant a laser printer ??
