hi
everyone
would like to as a question on lettering
if your cutting roman or script say the letter o should your deepest cut be on the out side shading towards centre or deepest cut inside shading out i have seen it done both ways and are wondering wether this matters

i would do the deep cuts on the outer side. but i think, just what i think--- it's more important to be consistent throughout your lettering. i would not ever want to do some letters one way and some the other. that would never work.

i would all ways do it one way but i do a lot of restoring of old english shotguns and double rifles
and have noticed some engravers seem to cut opposite to what is normal on all there shaded cuts
just curious if there was a reason
some of the old double rifels were brought back from india that might be why

if there seems to be a predominance there, or a pattern, might be wise to maybe follow that tradition. i've never done such a gun, and am not sure about that.especially in restoration work, it's critical to mimick as closely as possible whatever was laid down before.particularly if a line of guns had a certain style of engraving that became unique to the manufacturer.
