Looking to buy a new micro motor ..
was looking at the one from Jura or the one that GRS sells the NSK Emax EVOlution. Bit of a price difference. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on any particular one? Even if its not one mentioned above..
I will use if for stone setting.

Thank you
Doug

NSK is one of the best made. At the same time I absolutely trust anything Jura recommends and wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I believe Otto Frei carries the Jura kit.

I've used the Ram micromotors for many years and have found them tough and reliable. I put them through some LONG sessions of wood carving and never had them fail me. They are also VERY reasonably priced!

If your on a budget, you can`t go wrong with Foredom.
You can get an brand new "older" model quite cheaply these days & they are more than you need for stonesetting with the addition of a hammer handpiece.
Had mine for many years & never use more than a quarter of the available power.

If a high-speed handpiece slips from your hand and drops on your bench, a $800 machine's shaft is just as bent as a $400 one. I'm sure the motors of the more expensive offerings are stronger, but I personally buy a cheap motor. Then again, I don't use it for heavy duty work or for hammering. Mine is mainly for sharpening gravers and polishing jewelry after I'm done setting... The main advice I would give is: check the price of a replacement handpiece in advance and include that in your choice.

Thank you for you feedback guys..

Mark, I will look in to the Ram model. I am not familiar with it.

Chris, I have been using the Foredom micro motor for quite a while now. But I have had 2 handpieces (M H 170) go bad on me in the last several months. I have sent them off for repair. I think it might be a torque thing. Foredom does offer a step up micro motor than what I am currently using. I should consider that one as well.

Keirkof, That is also a great option. I will look today on just replacing just the handpiece. My motor is working fine. Foredom offers a brushless hand piece that may work with the motor I have. As I stated, its the handpiece that I have recently had trouble with.

I guess the budget thing is more about whether the NSK was worth spending the extra $$ for , for any particular reason.

Again, I really appreciate all of your opinions and responses.

MH-170, I've one here with the bearings shot :D
Good thing is the brush version is fairly cheap to replace.

Other than the lack of torque ( which you can live with) they last well.
Of course a fancy looking new one with neon lights would be nice but distracting eye candy.

I just found the NSK for $995. Otto Frei has the Jura for $895. For $100 extra I'd get the NSK. If you want to save a lot GRS sells the 850 turbine for $100s less.
