Mild steel practice plate rust

I recently descaled some mild steel welding plates with 30% vinegar, after rinsing they promptly rusted. I did a quick internet search and found this site https://dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667. Wondering what others use and recommend for practice plate rust prevention?

I haven’t had any experience with steel practice plates yet, but have done a fair bit of fabrication over the years, particularly tattoo machines. In my experience, the best way to avoid the flash oxidation you’re getting after rinsing your plates is to spray them with WD40 while they are still wet with the rinse water. The WD stands for “water displacing” it replaces the water, and will dry to a thin film that will protect the steel for months or even years from surface rust.

I read that article a few years ago and have been using WD 40 Specialist Rust Inhibitor ever since. It is good stuff!

I use renaissance wax to seal my pieces. Its a fancy wax paste that is used to preserve all sorts of things in museums and long term storage. I have pieces that are 8 years old coated with it and not a spec of rust. Goes on super easy and doesn't affect surface finish. Just rub on with your fingers and lightly polish off excess by hand with a clean cloth. its like 25$ for 200ml and that lasts a long time.

off subject-- wd 40 and a tooth brush scrubs my diamond disks. never any rust.

Thanks for the replies, I have small cans of WD40 strategically placed throughout the garage, utility room. Will also try Frog Lube based on a friendly MSD. Thanks to all who participate in this forum!
