I just purchased a new hermes Engravograph flat engraver. I own a small leather shop and will be making tags and such. The serial number starts with M and I understand that this indicated the model number.

When I look this model up online, all I see are drag engravers without a motor. The one I purchased has a motor. Does anyone know about these machines? Could you tell me what you know about them?

look on the back of the arm that carries the spindle. at the very rear of this arm, see if there are 2 holes with threads in them. if so, those holes mate with the 2 holes in the base of the motor mount arm. if no holes are there, it's unlikely there's a motor unit to fit this machine. if you can get a suitable motor mount, remember you will also need a rotating spindle to work.
the diamond rides on a shaft, and doesn't rotate in use.

Scripta machine

the machine has a motor already on it but I have seen many of the M series online without the motor. I'm thinking that this was optional or an add on. I'll send you a picture in an email.

I also have a
SCRIPTA PANTOGRAPH machine and it appears to be a little better machine than the new hermes. Do you know anything about the Scripta?

most of these machines came to life to facilitate on-site engraving in jewelry stores. back in the day, most stores had their own hand engraver. as the youngsters then saw little future in such, they fell prey to factory work or whatever. at this time, the panto came to life.most machines aren't really going to withstand much in the way of abuse. i'll say this any nh equipment i ever owned or operated, stood up to the abuse & then some. i never used scripta equipment, but the nh stuff is all good. only problem with the flat bed models, most i've ever seen are unable to do work on larger, bulkier items. that is why, way back when, i replaced the flat bed with the heavy duty gtx model. i've held items like bowling balls in this beast. hey when you're starving, any buck is a good buck !

Scripta like the NH M3

The scripta seems like a pretty nice machine as well but I can't find much information on them It is extremely similar to the NH M3. It can do larger objects than the NH M that I have. I am waiting on some vice jaws insert I purchased. I'll send some pictures to you.

Do you have any recommendations on using oxidizer or something to make the fonts stand out more?

Thanks

there's tips in the tips section, and a host of just this kind of directional info. alls ya gotta do is use the search bar. more info there than you'll likely ever need.
