This is my last commission. I finished it yesterday.

The customer wanted his sons' portraits. He also liked a beautiful engraving he had seen from Pedersoli.
Of course, I warned him that I do not copy others' engravings (all those who know me are aware of my commitment with creativity :D ), and we agreed that my job would just keep the flow of the master's design and a similar vegetation. Anyway, the final result is a completely different engraving, with many details that are from my own inspiration. I hope you like it.

Jordi that looks great. I like the way you have the children positioned in the leaf and floral growth. I like the way you utilized the gold very tastefully. The owner should be very happy.

Beautiful work, Jordi. Am I over analyzing or are some of the berries designed to look like eyes? Maybe even a cartoonish face thrown in here and there?

Reflection in children’s hair is incredible. And their laughing eyes:eek: how hell can you put this breath of life in your engraving?

Congratulations Jordi

Thanks to all of you.
I'm also proud of having been one of your students, Chris.
Eyes? Oops, you are right Joe!! I shouldn't have watched so many cartoons when I was a child. (Yes, I can feel how the berries are looking at me!!) :p
Santo, thanks, here is attached the best picture I have of the children's faces. The eyes are the most important part of a portrait, and I spend as much time as needed to put every line and dot in its correct place.

These are high-res pics of the portraits in process.
I wanted to highlight the dark eyes, so I left most of the face empty of dots, just some on the sides to shape the head.

Jordi, I find every aspect of your workmanship outstanding, however I feel it is utterly crass and distasteful to want one's childrens' images on a gun! That's not any critisism of you of course; you merely fulfilled the customers brief.

I can sort of understand engraving one's favourite retriever on a shotgun, but your children? Each to their own I guess.

One of the things I love about gun engraving is ........anything goes as far as the subject is concerned. Scrolls, flowers, children, animals, naked women, cars etc etc. A lot of this kind of work is commisioned to be kept in the family and passed down through the generations.

When you look across the various countries like the USA, Spain, Italy, England and the rest of Europe, their idea of what's acceptable and appropriate is quite different.

In the book "Fine European Gunmakers" some of the subject matter would make a Seargent Major in the army blush.

I think it's great as it's what makes the world such an interesting place and the work of an engraver so challenging.

Cheers

I'm all for naked women! Their images appear on just about every substrate man has ever handled, but apart from some famous film and porn stars, they're usually anonymous. There's just something creepy about portraying one's children on something like a gun or custom car etc.

I can't understand; do the people who do this really think so little of their children/wife/girlfriend or do they have some detached sense of loyalty for their loved ones that they can't express in more usual ways?

There's personalisation and there's plain creepy. As I say, each to their own.

My chainsaw bar is engraved with an image of my mother in the nude wrapped around a dead tree trunk. :p

I understand what you mean, Oz. Nevertheless, it is very usual, as Andrew says, to find here in Europe how diverse are people's interests when engraving a firearm. They want to own a unique and customized firearm.

In this case, the owner is not a hunter, he is a sportsman (olimpic shooting), so do not worry, it will cause no blood at all. And he's wanted to build a very customized and unique weapon. He's really cared of every detail to buid a shotgun to be proud of, and he's engraved who he loves more in it. Maybe he expresses his love to his children when he dedicates every victory to them... that's so personal. But, of course, we are talking about loyalty to them.
