sharpening

hi there im new to this so i have noticed and i think im being over thinking things but when im sharpening a graver on lapping machine first on 350 grit and get the shape of graver ill put a 1000 grit on next, cos there is a tiny bit difference in the thickness of the wheels i get a slight shadow on the graver cos im then at slightly different angle . is this normal

might a difference in the blank too, I get the shadow and sharpen till its gone. You won't be using the 350 again on that burin unless you change geo.

I am also new to engraving and ran into the same problems until I purchased one of the "post" type of sharpening fixtures. I'm sure you've seen them. The graver/collet attaches to a circular dial which is adjusted to the angle you desire. The whole unit slides up and down on a "post" and stays at the proper angle no matter what the thickness of your abrasive wheel is. I believe it is well worth the cost to purchase one of these fixtures.
