Some impressions from the Grand Masters.

As I am packing to get on the road back home from Emporia, Kansas I would like to give you a couple of my impressions from the Grand Masters at GRS/Glendo.
I am sure that some of the other members will post more information and pictures when they have time and return home.

First and foremost is the incredible talent instructing and attending these seminars.
Not only the Master who is instructing but many of those are taking the class would be considered masters in their own right.

The warm, friendly, low-key but totally professional handling of the event by all members of the GRS/Glendo family of employees is something very special.
Yes, they treat one another and all who are attending as welcome, valued family.
Quite rare in this fast paced day and age.

Having attended a couple of these functions I have found every one of the invited Grand Masters to be totally friendly, approachable and more than willing to demonstrate their skill and knowledge in both the more formal class setting or the hanging out and meal time bull sessions.
Nothing has to be dragged out of the masters, the pearls of wisdom flow freely.
During one meal time Ken Hunt was so busy explaining one of his wonderful techniques that he did not take a bite of his food by the time we left the restaurant.
The wait-person could not understand why he didn’t want it packed to go.
But Ken was much more interested in the people than the food.

Another impression is all the fun that is mixed with the serious side of gaining knowledge at this function.
So many of the Master themselves and the attendees have much talent in other fields.
One of these seems to be in music and voice.
Most evening and many meal times turn into wonderful entertainment sessions.
Sam and Abigail are well known for their musical ability.
But I want to tell you that Ron Smith, Winston, Marcus, Fred and Judy, Weldon and Brian Powley and others all have enough musical and/or voice talent to take a show on the road.

Yes, there are a lot of fun and good times at the GRS/Glendo learning center.
But underlying that is a very serious dedication to moving our art form forward.
Their full, flat out dedication to education was recognized at an evening event held at Emporia State University where they have sponsored a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in engraving.
This is a first in the United States and an answer to the old world apprenticeship programs.

GRS also helps many of the students out by providing them part time employment.
Make no mistake, DJ Glaser and Don before him together with Kim Pember, General Manager is fully dedicated to fostering the learning and art of engraving.

Another point that I found very interesting in a personal way was the fact that no tools sales are normally allowed during this time and I had planned to buy a few things.
When I approached my sales rep. he told me that he was forbidden from making sales during the time of the Masters.
Remarkable for a commercial company, he explained that they wanted to keep it totally commercially free.
After a bit of persuasion Kim Pember did grant me an OK to buy what I wanted so that I could drive home with my new toys.

It will take me some time to fully digest my thoughts and will probably want to share more with you later, if you will excuse me.
Please forgive me if I have rambled on, but these events just blow me away.

Respect and regards to all and a special thank you to all that provided me with the pleasure of their company this week.
A special thank you to Sam, Abigail, Tira, Rex, Andrew, Mike B; Sandy, Ron and Liz for their help and friendship.

John B.

What John Said. Plus: My deepest thanks to the folks at GRS/Glendo for the invitation. I had one of the greatest times of my life this week end.

I've just returned home and back to reality myself. John pretty much said it all except John is ALWAYS too modest! He didn't mention the fact that at Emporia State Univerity he was presented with "Engraving Arts Award of Educational Distinction". John along with fellow iGraver member Martin Strolz of Austria and Rene Delcour of Belgium were recipients of this first time award. Congrats to all of you!
I could go on and on about the weekend but I need some sleep!

John, no problem... my first thought was...hmmm did I do something to make you mad, then the second thought was Naaa, you were probably was as tired and forgetful from all the fun as I was. And how could you list everybody anyway, somebodys bound to get overlooked.

and heavens know I think I learn way more from you than I could ever repay. But it was a great time for all.

Back to work with new enthusiasm...

I drove 13 1/2 hours home yesterday. Most of the trip was passed reviewing all the concepts and tips gleaned from the week. In the run-up to the Grand Masters week, I discovered I had gotten rather complaisant in my work. Thanks to Winston C., you, and the other 10 members of you group, as well as all the other participants over the weekend, the enthusiasm is back. Thanks to all for the kick in the pants. BR

Thank you John for your wonderful perspective and comments. I was so pleased to meet you , and
for you being so gracious to let my wife take a photograph of you posing with me. I have to admit
I felt like an imposter as I was walking around, imposing on all of those in attendance Saturday
morning, to give me an autograph in my book. I know most probably thought to themselves, who
is this? Thanks to all of you for being so nice! I can say that I was really impressed with the
"buzz that was in the air"............people with a passion for an art form that most outsiders will never
fully understand or appreciate. I can say it was nice to ponder to myself , that for one moment all the
people of the world should be so likeminded! Cross that country boundary, forget the gender gap, get
on with sharing what we have in common, and lets produce something beautiful by helping each other
advance our skills and understanding.
I will cut this short of writing a novel, although I would like to list everyone individually; saying I hope
to be able to meet all of you again and get to know all of you better, but want to take a moment before
I go to thank Kim , and the others at GRS for allowing me to be present. I want to thank Sam, Diane, and
Chris , and the other teachers that have done so much for those of us who want to succeed at becoming
a part of this circle of artists. Best wishes to all, and safe travel for all of you who travelled so for
to share your passion.
Sincerely,
Bill Albers

John,

I had so MUCH FUN! I don't know how we could have had any more and not have been doing something illegal!!!

I must also thank DJ Glaser, Kim Pember and the entire staff of GRS for their dedication to engraving as an art form; for providing a great facility and establishing a non-threatening atmosphere excellent for learning. (remember, I use a hammer & chisel for 99.9% of my work). Should you never choose to make use of GRS tools and equipment you will still, at some point down the road, benefit from their efforts directed at raising the awareness and sophistication of the common folk in regards to engraving. This attitude (which I believe to be genuine) combined with what seems to be a tireless perseverance and outside the box thinking will eventually result in a much increased appreciation for engraving as fine art ! Engraving is destined to no longer be defined as a simply a handicraft!

Tip 'O the hat to all involved!
Weldon

Bill Albers: It was a pleasure to meet you too!

To Bill Albers and Mrs. Albers.
It was I who was honored to have my picture taken with you.
Hope to see you there again or in Reno if you can make it.

My impressions and comments about the Grand Masters program are applicable to any of the engraving classes, I feel sure.

All of these programs provide, in a very short time the technique and knowledge we all need to increase our skill and artistry.

Having had contact with students from Johnny W’s classes, Ray Cover’s and Brian Marshall’s and the regular GRS programs and other schools shows me that they all do a wonderful job of advancing the students skill and artistry.
They all provide the valuable benefit of a “social” contact network with your classmates and instructors, another lifetime asset.

Whether you attend a formal class setting or take private lessons from one of the fine engravers willing to teach one-on-one I urge you to do it if at all possible.
Money spent on education is an investment we never regret and pays dividends for the rest of our life.
