I’d like to try engraving a men’s wristwatch case and bracelet band. For you guys that do this professionally do you use a jeweler/watchmaker to disassemble and reassemble the crystal and inner workings or are you set up to do it yourself. It seems like that’s a rabbit hole that could swallow some serious dollars to get set up right. Just wondering.

I feel like the answer would be the same for gun engravers some prefer to have all quality controll aspects covered by themselves and not leave anything to chance by someone else and others would rather have someone more competent than themselves work on stuff that they are not too familiar with. This is just what I have seen personally il tear down guns myself and some watches i will remove movements but not crystals so personally it just depends on the price points and complications

It looks like watches that are worth engraving are protected by the manufacturer’s dealer network, just like firearms. I understand why, it’s just painful when you are on the outside looking in. Make friends with your local gunsmiths and jewelers.

I'm kinda lucky in that respect my father is a gunsmith so whatever I can't handle will go to him and as far as jewelers go I myself am a repair jeweler full time to grow my other skills and know several of the local shops in my area still fairly new to the engraving game but it is my main focus outside of work

I am a long way from doing anything for hire but thought it would be something to explore. I’ll stick with my belt buckles. Much simpler.

Engraving a wristwatch sounds like a great project! For anyone considering this, it’s usually easier to have a jeweler or watchmaker handle the disassembly and reassembly. Setting up your own tools can get quite expensive.I’m replying to an old post here, but I thought I’d share that I once bought a clone for a similar project. The quality was impressive, and it gave me a good feel for the process without risking an expensive original. It’s a solid way to practice and see how detailed you need to be.
