No one in my family has any interest. I bought my daughter a jeweler's bench of her own, she was excited for a few minuets with all her new Gravermach 8 set-up particularly the 850 rotary hand piece. She has a fairly complete set-up right next to mine. She put in two or three hours and her set-up has set. I have enough tools to fill a shop pretty completely including lathes, shaper, milling machine. drill presses, lapidary set-up, leather tooling set-up with hundreds of stamping tools, belt grinders for the knife, bit and spur maker. I am leaving everything to one of the instructors to distribute to promising beginners or use in their instruction. Includes 8 by 24 enclosed trailer. All they have to do is come load it up. They even get all the regular tools like wrenches, tool boxes etc. Best I could think of. Fred

There must be something of value or interest in this thread... from the number of looks alone in 48 hours? Over a thousand recent looks by now. Or are all these looks just morbid curiosity?

Seems I have learned a couple facts myself. If YOU don't dispose of what you have while you are alive for a fair value - the odds are that if it doesn't get buried, burned, dumped or auctioned off for pennies - it is pretty much worthless.

Of course it can also be donated as Fred posted above and hopefully continue to be used as intended... by contributing to the furtherance of hand engraving and metalsmithing skills.

Which would mean that all those thousands and thousands of dollars tied up in tools and books is a bad (read lost) investment? At least monetarily.

"Fun" has an entirely different value that varies from person to person. As does the ratio of expenditure to income, when that's your main incentive.

For most hobbyists on here - that would make it simply an overly expensive entertainment/adventure expense?

Gotta be sumthin' more to it. I would hope?

Didn't you read the Terms and Conditions when you first registered on this site? In the fine print on page 23, paragraph 7 it states that you will all your tools and equipment to Sam. That is irrevocable.

Thinking in the direction of donating "stuff"... it might be better to differentiate between a single owner type teaching establishment and a school with good facilities, a staff and a record of longevity?

There are least a half dozen non-profit metalsmithing schools out there that have been around 20 years or more... some with really good reputations. And there are some in other countries to consider...

Glad to see someone optimistic enough to figure they and their tools will endure as long as the current universe.

Some of the rest of us are mortals and have to face the facts of our reality. Sooner or later...

Sticking your head in the sand will not make it go away. We can't take it with us but we can try to see it put to good use when we're gone.

That was the point of bringing this thread back...

That's what we have kids for............to deal with all our "treasures" once we have made the final journey :)

You should have seen the basement full of stuff my mom & dad left. I didn't have any place to put a lot of it so I kept the really good stuff and had to get rid of the rest. I guess that's been going on since there were people with "stuff". :)

The only"stuff" we have of real value is the skill and knowledge we have acquired.
If we have shared this with students and others as we passed through life our "stuff" is in good hands, heads and hearts.
Best.

What an interesting read. As someone just getting started in this obsession, it is sad to hear there is no-one to pass the heritage to. It is disappointing to see, not just the hardware risking rust, but the loss of unique knowledge fade from the world. I have tried to pique the interest of my step-sons in engraving, but I fear it looks too daunting to them. They watch my basic struggles to put down a line which has the right curve and cut, and realize it will take years to see any tangible return. I am in no hurry, my goals are very long term. The expectation of any real return is a decade away, but now I wonder what my legacy will be; can I inspire the next generation.

It's an interesting topic. I believe the knife making guild has an answer for this, the members of the guild get together with the widow and value or help sell the contents of the shed to help in that hard time. I should make a will one day, I'll probably make a list of stuff to post to my students and make lists of people who could possibly help with selling things.

My wife sells everything dirt cheap, because when she asks how much i spent on tools i reduce my verbal spending budget to 50 bucks, so in her mind everything is 50 bucks...hahaha

so some day somebody will wonder aloud why some girl in Australia ended up with all my stuff and i'll say, "Hey, she asked."
