Here are some pictures of a Winchester Model 12 - 20 Gauge that I purchased at a gun show three months ago, and as you can see it was used hard. My friend and Master Metal Finisher, Chris Stinnett, who works with me did a wonderful job restoring all the metal on this classic Winchester.

Brant,First we take the gun part and strip off any bluing to see what's damage is to the metal we don't use buffer's all work is done with file's, polishing stones and wet & dry automotive paper all by hand you must keep all nice sharp edges on the firearm and not have any dished out pin or screw holes last step 400 grit or 600 W&D paper.Simple supply's you can buy at any hardware store. A neighbor gave me one that he scratched his drivers license number in with an electric vibrator scriber...don't know yet what the correct fix is gonna be. A real shame as it is a real low serial number Mod 12 and the rest of the gun is factory mint.

Archie, first see what a good metalsmith thinks about removing the vibro numbers.
If that is a negative the numbers can be cut deeper with a graver and inlaid with carbon steel soft iron binding wire.
In the past I have bought several guns and restored them that way.

Sorry for posting the soft iron inlay remark on your turf, JJ.
In no way did I intend to highjack your post of the restoration of your Model 12.
