Thank you, Roger.
I have no idea why the customer choose this material for such commission, instead of a custom made real gold. But it is no my business, we have to do 100% job, no matter what.
I love it. Some years ago I engraved a few Zippos but found that the time invested meant I couldn't make them pay commercially. It's great that you got a commission for one! I love the final product in the last pic, has it still got to be plated? The patination looks fabulous.
I'm betting they went with brass + plate because it's a lot cheaper than gold. Actually I'm not certain they make a Gold Zippo - I know they have a Sterling Silver one and last time I checked it was around $300 wholesale. Since the brass ones are less than $20 wholesale, and gold is a lot more expensive than silver...
I agree with Marcus - if it's not already plated in the last pair of pictures then doing so will be literally 'gilding the lilly' (adding unnecessary ornamentation).
Paul that is the most embellished Zippo I ever seen, Nice work. What did you fill it with before you engraved it.
Tim Zippo makes only plated, brass, silver (I don't know if they put a plating on it) and gold. The brass ones work pretty good then I spray a coat of crystal clear on when done. You could also gold plat them like Paul spoke of. A stainless one would be nice since they own Case it's strange they don't, I do believe they made those at one time.
