Question: Beginner instruction

Hello cafe. I’m new to engraving. In fact never produced a cut yet but for years have always wanted to learn and now I’m at a point in life that will allow that.
Before I spend money on equipment and tools I would like to find instruction and classes to invest in first.
I’m located in central Illinois and would prefer to find classes close in geographic area to my location starting off. I did find some instructors in Missouri. Indiana and then GRS training facility. Just wondering if I missed any?
Any help will be greatly appreciated and look forward to the cafe group and hopefully meeting some great engravers

Welcome to the Cafe, Mike.

Don't limit yourself to finding training that's close to you. If you want to learn, then be prepared to travel to learn from the best. GRS will begin accepting registrations for its 2020 beginner's classes on Dec 3rd. Their training center has been expanded and will be even better than before, so keep them in mind.

Thanks Sam. I’m really looking forward to learning a skill I have admired in others for awhile
I have my father in-laws service revolver from the 1950s when he was a police officer. The scroll work on it compared to today’s work is amazing. The art has really grown in depth and complexity. Tools have gotten better also. anyway thanks for welcoming and hope to learn from the group

Best of luck on your search for instruction.
Check with the NRA to see where colleges are holding Summer Engraving classes.

What Sam said. There are several Basic Metal Engraving courses available for sign up at 8:00 AM Central, on Dec. 3rd at GRS. https://grstc.com/schedule

IMO Mike, as an aspiring engraver, Basic Metal Engraving at GRS is the course you absolutely want to take right up front. It's a full week of intensive hands on instruction covering everything you need to learn to begin engraving seriously.

The instructors are among the best engravers in the world (or as Sam once said to me, "the Universe").

Don't hesitate for a moment to pull the trigger on this one. It's literally one of the best decisions you'll ever make.
